If you are arriving in Raleigh early on Friday afternoon,  the NC State Homecoming Parade  will end at the new traffic circle on Hillsborough Street just past Maiden Lane.   The Pack Howl Parade begins at the corner of Hillsborough Street and Dan Allen Drive 6-7 p.m.

Friday Evening festivities will take place starting at 8 pm at Natty Greene’s  downtown.   We have reserved The Loft, a private room upstairs, for all Alumni and Active brothers and their guests to meet and mingle.   The setup will be heavy Hors d’oeuvres and a Cash Bar.  We are asking everyone to contribute $10/person towards the cost of the room and Hors d’oeuvres.

Around 10:30-11pm we will be moving the party over to the Chapter House on 20 Maiden Lane.  The undergrads are hoping that we might get a visit from John McCarter to lead a rendition of the “Wild West Show” this year.  They’ve heard the stories and want to see the live version.

Saturday is game day and the actives will be holding a tailgate in the Fairgrounds lot.   If you don’t have tickets there may be tickets available through the Alumni Association tailgate or at the NC State Ticket Office at (919)-865-1510.

Sunday at 12pm the Annual Alumni Brothers meeting will be held at the Chapter House and we are in need of some Alumni Brothers to step up and bring their talents to work in helping make Theta Chi the strongest Greek men’s organization on campus.   I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the direction of the Active Chapter and the Alumni Board and hopefully will feel motivated to help the Active Chapter carry their positive momentum in to 2011 and beyond.   We will be holding elections for President and Vice-President at this meeting.  Also, we will be discussing renovation plans for the Fraternity House and will have a presentation from a representative with the developer that NC State is partnering with to build the hotel across from the Bell Tower.

We hope to see you at these events.

Ken Updegrave,  Alumni Board President

Maiden Lane Historic District

Developed 1893 through 1914

A streetcar suburb made more desirable by R. Stanhope Pullen’s donation of land for a university and park

The late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century houses along Maiden Lane illustrate the close association of residential development with the establishment of the nearby college and city park. The Maiden Lane district also reflects the  streetcar-suburb settlement pattern that Raleigh experienced during the first years of the twentieth century. The streetcar line that extended west along Hillsborough Street (then called Hillsboro Road) encouraged families to live on Maiden Lane in what was then a rural area outside town. Development here predates construction in Raleigh’s other western streetcar suburbs, Cameron Park and Boylan Heights, both closer to the city center.

The fine collection of houses also represents the shift in architectural taste from the exuberant Queen Anne style, seen in the twin cottages at 9 and 11 Maiden Lane, to the transitional Queen Anne-Colonial Revival style of the duplexes across the street. The duplexes feature more restrained architectural detail, a characteristic of the later Colonial Revival style, applied to houses with the irregular massing of the earlier Queen Anne style.

Known since the later twentieth century as a student rental neighborhood, Maiden Lane has a history of rental properties mixed with owner-occupied houses.

History

When surveyor Fendol Bevers filed a plat for Maiden Lane in 1892, the area was far outside the city limits but fronted busy Hillsboro Road, which led west to the seat of Orange County. Two substantial developments across Hillsboro Road made the area attractive: the growing campus of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (known today as North Carolina State University) and the large swath of parkland donated to the city that became Pullen Park. The earliest houses on Maiden Lane, built in the 1890s, belonged to families associated with the college, including the home of English professor and later college president D. H. Hill. Once Raleigh’s streetcar line extended as far as “West Raleigh,” as the area was known at the time, a Maiden Lane address became even more attractive. A 1920 expansion of city limits brought Maiden Lane within Raleigh’s boundaries.

Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the street featured a mix of relatively stable owner-occupants along with renters who came and went every few years. In addition to D. H. Hill, who lived at 2 Maiden Lane, another long-time homeowner was John Allen Arey, who headed State’s Dairy Extension Service for over thirty years. Arey, known as the “father of the progressive dairy program,” lived at 5 Maiden Lane from the mid-1920s through the mid-1960s. Most renters were professors, teachers, business owners, salesmen, or government workers. A few were married male students and their wives and fewer still were working women. Towards the middle of the twentieth century, there were a few single female students renting on Maiden Lane. Today, the houses along Maiden Lane are all student rentals or fraternity houses. This demographic shift happened over two decades beginning in the mid-1960s.

Brothers:

The undergraduate and alumni Brothers of Delta Rho Chapter at NC State would like to invite you to the semi-annual Bob Vila Day (Saturday, April 9th from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm) at the Chapter house; 20 Maiden Lane, Raleigh, NC across from the Bell Tower. Brother Mike Collins will be cooking a spaghetti dinner to be served after the work is done and we will be holding our monthly alumni board meeting after the cleanup as well. Bob Vila Day is a tradition where undergraduate and alumni brothers work together to maintain and improve the Chapter house and grounds, appropriately named after the master craftsman himself.

The main portion of the house is over 100 years old and on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Chapter was founded in 1952 and approaching its 60th anniversary very quickly. The house is in need of many repairs, though we’ve only selected a few projects to complete this time. The Chapter Alumni Corporation has set aside funds for these projects, but we seek your contributions of talent, time and effort to complete them. Whether you know how to swing a hammer, push a broom, paint a wall, or just good at directing others doing the work, we invite you to come participate or simply encourage those more skilled at the construction arts. Undergraduates will park off-site to free up as much parking as possible, but as space is limited you may be directed to park off-site as well.

If you feel led to contribute financially, know that it is not an obligation but will be greatly appreciated. Any contributions will also be credited towards 1952 club membership. This is an excellent way of extending a helping hand to all who seek it. Thank you in advance for your time. We hope to see you there!

The following day the Active Chapter will be hosting Bowling for Babies.

During the NC State Kay Yow Spring football game event the Active Chapter will host the Second Annual Spring Alumni Tailgate between the RBC Center and Carter-Finley.  Th Spring Game starts on April 16th, 2011 at 1pm.   For up-to-date info on the Spring game tailgate  make sure that you are signed up for our email list.

Active Chapter Philanthropy Events

Alumni,

My name is Ryan Heffner, and I am the Philanthropy Chair for the Delta Rho chapter.  We have two philanthropy events this year, our 5th annual Bowling for Babies tournament and our 2nd annual Harris Field St. Baldricks head shaving event (both events support St. Baldrick’s Cure for Cancer drive).  We are asking for you support in these events, which can be one of several ways. I would love to have the company you work for sponsor the event, whether it be a monetary donation or gift cards or even by signing up a team to participate in the event.  If you would like to sign up for the event, there is a link below to a Google Document that will give you more information about the event and allow you to sign up online. If you would like to donate money, you can do so by bringing it to the house and putting it in the mailbox or by bringing it to the event on April 10th at 1:00 pm at The Alley on Hillsborough Street.

For the St. Baldricks event you are more than welcome to come and shave with us, and in addition we are trying to raise money for our team to donate to the St. Baldricks foundation by shaving our heads. If you would like to make a contribution to that event, the link is below. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. The link to our team page is listed below.

Again, thank you for your consideration and support of the Theta Chi chapter at NC State. We are very fortunate to have such a strong Alumni and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Also….the pledge class from last semester had an average GPA of: 3.24

Gentlemen…….this is outstanding.  Yes, there are still some brothers
who need to improve their grades, but the numbers above are impressive to
say the least.  This is reflective of their hard work and dedication
individually as well as their commitment to recruit quality guys.

Letter from the Active Chapter President – Adam Taylor

Letter from the President

Alumni, Parents, and Brothers,

My name is Adam Taylor and I am pleased to welcome all of you to the new year as President of Theta Chi Fraternity, Delta Rho Chapter at North Carolina State University.  I pledged Theta Chi in the Fall 2009, and know that since becoming a Brother I have become made a better man and member of my community because of it.  I have seen the benefits of Brotherhood in Theta Chi and will lead the Chapter so that it may do the same for other Brothers that join our ranks and the community as a whole.

Theta Chi has made great strides over the past few semesters.  We have doubled the number of Brothers over the past 2 years and are well on our way to a 60 man Chapter by next Fall. The Chapter’s finances are stable and our average GPA is the 3rd highest of among fraternities on campus. Last Spring we raised $3,511 dollars for St. Baldrick’s Foundation (www.stbaldricks.org), a national philanthropy organization that organizes participants who collect donations for the daunting task of shaving their heads in the name of childhood cancer.  All of the donations go to funding cancer research.  This year the Brotherhood plans to double last years’ amount.  As we grow and hold ourselves to a higher standard we will continue down this path to Chapter excellence.

None of our strides would have been possible had it not been for Alumni support, and undergraduates’ motivation.  Our relationship with the Alumni has helped the chapter financially, academically and helped boost recruitment efforts.  The forming of the 1952 Club and rewarding academic achievement is the type of support that directly helps the undergraduates and motivates them to do better as Chapter members and as men.  The 1952 Club an Alumni gifting program where participants pledge to donate $19.52 a month to the Alumni Corporation of Theta Chi.  The collected money helps build an endowment fund to be used to fund both the annual operating budget of the Alumni Corporation and build cash reserves for needed property maintenance.  If you have any questions about the 1952 please contact our Alumni President Ken Updegrave at Ken.Updegrave.jr@gmail.com or our Alumni Vice President, Spencer Snedecor at 3105spencer@gmail.com.  The undergrads have taken more responsibility in regards to finances, academics and chapter obligations, and their sound financial base sets the precedent for future Brothers.

Looking towards the future, our goal is to have 60 active Brothers.  Working toward that goal, it is my pleasure to announce that we have pinned 13 outstanding new Pledges as direct result of the brotherhood’s hard work.  These men will be molded into fully functioning Brothers and initiated on April 15th, 2011.  As we grow larger, our main goal is to continue the recent success in Alumni relations, financial responsibility, and academic achievement while preserving the intense brotherhood that convinced me to join my first semester at NCSU.  With a strong motivated brotherhood, I see endless possibilities for the Delta Rho chapter.

If you have any questions at all please feel free to contact me at: presidentdeltarho@gmail.com.

Regards,

Adam Taylor

President, Theta Chi Delta Rho

Announcing the 1952 Club

Announcing the Delta Rho 1952 Club

Click here to start giving in the 1952 Club

Why 1952? It is the year Delta Rho was chartered at NCSU

What is it?
It is a take-off on what National calls the Alumni Association 1856 Program which National promotes as a good way to engage with Alumni to help provide needed funding for the operational aspect of an Alumni Chapter or  Corporation.  It is a monthly financial commitment to the Delta Rho Alumni Corporation of $19.52 per month (or an annual 1 time contribution of $230).

What is the purpose?

It will help to build an endowment fund to be used to fund both the annual operating budget of the Alumni Corporation and build cash reserves for needed property maintenance.

Who administers the program and what is it used for?
It is managed by the Alumni Board of Directors who will be allocating the funds on a % basis across 3 main budget categories to pay for such things as listed under each category-

  1. Alumni relations and communications
    a. Homecoming activities
    b. Regular newsletters and data base maintenance
    c. Recognition
  2. Undergraduate academic support
    a. Scholarships
    b. National convention attendance
    c. Delta Rho promotional activities
  3. Operational funding for the Alumni Corporation
    a. Insurance coverage
    b. Routine House maintenance expenses
    c. Rainy day fund and operational reserves

Start date- At this years’ 2010 Homecoming and there is a special incentive to join.

How does it work? The Alumni Corporation is working with EFT Corporation that is able to set up and perform automatic monthly drafts. Similar to a PayPal account that is doing auto draft.
Or payment may be made in full on an annual basis and sent directly to the Treasurer of the Alumni Corporation.

Who audits it?
The Alumni Board meets monthly and as a part of the Treasurer’s update report, the status of the 1952 Club will be monitored. Also, at the annual business meeting a budget and endowment review will be shared with the Brotherhood.

What is in it for the Alumni?

  1. For the first 50 Brothers who sing up – A glass paperweight with our fraternity crest and custom etched “Delta Rho 1952 Club” will be given to them. This handsomely designed and professionally crafted piece is sure to be something all Brothers will want to display on their desk.
  2. Every participant will have their name w/graduation yr. added to a “master: 1952 Club plaque that will be prominently displayed in the Delta Rho House. Names will be added to the plaque in recognition of a Brothers’ annual participation in the program.
  3. Increased visibility of and participation by the Alumni is critically needed to help further the ideals and values of Theta Chi at NC State. In short you are helping to insure the long term viability of the Delta Rho Chapter and its active Brotherhood.

Message from the Treasurer

My name is Joe Greathouse, and I currently serve as Treasurer of the Alumni Corporation.  I graduated in 1995, and during my undergraduate years, I served as Secretary, Marshal and Chaplain.  My wife, Vanessa, and I live in Raleigh and have one son.

It is amazing what a difference a year makes.  I am pleased to say that over the past year, the undergraduate leadership team and the alumni corporation directors have really taken a look at what we (alumni and undergraduates)  need to be doing financially in order for Delta Rho to be successful.   We have set appropriate expectations with one-another and have developed  a relationship that is based on mutual respect and is beneficial to all brothers.  The house corporation has been able to address critical livability issues at the chapter house as a direct result.

We do need your help. We need brothers to volunteer to serve. We have an undergraduate chapter that is poised to explode on the NC State campus. They need your help as advisers, as volunteers with alumni committees and as officers of the corporation.

We have really turned a corner financially and can now focus on rebuilding our depleted cash reserves. You can help by making a donation online:

With your help, we can put together the alumni infrastructure that our undergraduates will need in order to become and remain an outstanding chapter at NC State.
